I documented my day now that I'm no longer working a 9-5. Granted this was an atypical day, but it was the only day I thought to document. But I see people do this all the time so I thought I'd try my hand at it. Hopefully, I don't bore my reader to tears. (Hi Mom!) 7:30 - Wake up with the kids (late). FF is already up and gone to his office to work. Spend some time snuggling, which is the best thing ever. 7:45 - Load the dryer with last night's wash, then load the washing machine with another load. (I'm behind on my laundry this week.) 8:00 - Make coffee, then clean out the nastiness that is the fridge. (What IS THAT SMELL?) Spray, wipe, throw away old or expired stuff. Cucumbers from garden are frozen in the back, so I take that as a sign that I can slow down on the pickle-making. After all, who am I to mess with karma? I take out some frozen chicken broth I made from an old rooster 2 weeks ago. Kids are playing. Life is calm. 8:20 - FF and FF Girl go out to collect eggs while I get breakfast ready. Also, put the chicken broth in the slow cooker to defrost further. Help FF Boy with his chore, feeding the cats and filling up their water dish. 8:30 - Breakfast. Sausage and an egg cake today. The kids are not impressed. FF Boy likes the egg cake. FF Girl is all about that meat. 9:00 - Play with kids for a bit , while attempting to clear away a few toys. Then get them started on schoolwork. Put a jar of sun tea outside for later. 9:15 - Take out laundry from dryer and put new load in dryer. Put new load in washing machine. Come back to help kids with more schoolwork. 9:45 - Little potty accident with FF Boy. He's on meds for bronchitis so an accident is understandable. Clean bathroom, put FF Boy in tub and clean him. New clothes, clean bathroom, all is good. Back to school work. 10:30 - Spend some time working on the lesson plans for next week. This is our first year homeschooling (officially). (Note: This is not uninterrupted time. Shout out to fellow mothers! The struggle, y'all.) Still "in school" so we attempt some letter sounds and phoneme work. 11:00 - Give FF Boy his meds and help him find his Lego Minecraft Steve that he must hold onto as he does a worksheet. I don't ask why. Also, get all of the toys out of the bed from this morning, help FF Girl open way too much Playdough. Since she's only 2, most of her "schoolwork" is sensory play with a few songs and puzzles for good measure. 11:15 - Chicken broth nice and hot. Add a bit of water, a bit of dried rosemary (which we have an abundance of) and some holstein cow peas we grow every year. Also take time to try and clean the stovetop. 11:30 - Unload the dishwasher. Reload the dishwasher. Quite possibly my most hated chore. FF often helps because I hate it so much. Clear dining table of play dough and toys. Wipe down table and vacuum underneath. Schoolwork. 11:35 - We've got a new duckling! The hatch begins a bit early for the 57 duck eggs we have incubating upstairs. He's a cute little Rouen duckling, all yellow and black/brown. Noon - Chop some veg (mostly homegrown carrots) and add to the low-set slow cooker. Also add leftover sausage from this morning, because hey ... why waste it? 12:10 - Start some yogurt in the pressure cooker. I'll have to do a post someday about exactly how to do this. But I will say, when we first started making yogurt we used store-bought yogurt as the starter culture. We now use this, and it has been the best decision we could make. 12:45 - Put FF Girl down for a nap. YAY!!!!! Too bad it doesn't last long. 1:30 - Off to the grocery store to buy a bit of smoked turkey. We don't raise turkeys, so if we want it, we have to buy it. Gotta get FF to smoke some chickens ... hmm. 2:30 - Put turkey in crock pot. Kids want a snack. We've got watermelon and it is really hot outside, so guess what they get? More laundry. In with the dirty out with the clean, then fold. Take some time to take out clothes the kids can't wear and put in a bag for friends with babies (or Goodwill next time we're in town)! 2:45 - Our fowl look hot. Fill up a wide plastic container with fresh water and a little ice for the ducks and chickens. Two ducks promptly sit in the water. I love our ducks. 3:15 - Make two loaves of sandwich bread intended to sustain us for a week but in reality, 1 1/2 loaves are gone in 3 days. 5:00 - Dinner time. Get sun tea sweetened and cold, make some rice and kids set the table. Dad comes down from work just in time. Turkey and veg with rice. Too good for words. 6:00 - Kids play outside with a neighbor while FF and I finish up some chores outside. FF is building more nesting boxes for some of our ducks. We have one duck who has gone broody and is sitting a clutch of eggs just behind the second composter. I worry that she is getting enough water in the heat, but I don't want to disturb her. If she does it successfully, the chicks would be the first ducklings hatched on our farm that were not hatched in an incubator. *fingers crossed* 7:30 - Bath time for the kids.We pull out all the stops - Mr. Bubble, Mr. Bubble bath crackles, bath paints. FF Boy and FF Girl spend time painting the bathtub and themselves, while making "potions" with the bath crackles and different sized containers I gave them for bath play. 8:30 - All washed up, pj's on and smelling lovely (my little squishies!). They sit in bed and watch Zootopia on Amazon while I fold laundry. We don't get much in the way of cable out here, so we make do with Netflix and Amazon Video. Which means the kids' screen time is a lot of repeats. They don't seem to mind. FF Boy could watch Wild Kratts any day of the week. I have my beautiful friend Noora to thank for putting us on to that show. It's actually NOT annoying. Which is unusual for a kid's show. 9:00 - Planning schoolwork for tomorrow. FF is working upstairs. House is quiet. 10:00 - Put the rest of tonight's load of dishes in dishwasher and start it. FF is downstairs so we might actually get some time to watch a TV show. We piddle around the house doing smaller things and making note of things we need to do this week, like making laundry soap and picking the loads of green beans in the backyard. 10:15 - FF is asleep. Guess no Game of Thrones tonight. I take a shower instead. 10:40 - Minor panic attack over schoolwork and FF Boy's bronchitis issue. Busy myself with throwing away old toys while everyone is asleep and catching up on some knitting that seems to take forever. 11:15 - Panic attack is over. Hope to get to sleep, but feel a cold coming on. Hot chamomile tea and a Zyrtec should do the trick. Drift off.
